TURSKI PAŠA KAVU PIJE Turski paša kavu pije, a moj dragi v zemli gnije. Šta će meni raj pomoči kod ovakve crne noči? The Ottoman pasha is drinking coffee while my sweetheart is buried in his grave and decaying. No Heaven can help me in a night as dark as this one. This is the universal story: the conqueror gets it all. People are ammunition to acquire such power.

TURKI POROBILI SU HORVACKU ZEMLU Ej, Turki porobili su Horvacku zemlu. Ej, stare porobili, mlade vulovili. Ej, na zadnje vlovili braca i sestricu. Ej, sestricu postajli turskom cesaricom, Braca su pak deli vu škuro temnico. Ej, Turki porobili su Horvacku zemlu. The Ottomans have conquered the Croatian lands. They enslaved the elderly people and imprisoned the young. Finally, they captured a brother and sister. They appointed the sister to be the Ottoman empress, while they threw her brother into a dark dungeon.

- Oj, Katice, nisi ljuba moja, Već ti jesi mila seka moja. Mother was waking Kata early in the morning, saying that the Ottomans have surrounded their home. The harambasha (leader) said: „Don't wake Katica, I will wake her myself, caressing her rosy cheeks with a flower. “The Ottomans left and took Katica with them. When they crossed the Red Sea, Katica said: „Damn you, Red Sea! My brother crossed you three times. “ The Ottoman harambasha asked: „Katica, my beautiful sweetheart, what was your brother's name? “„My brother's name was Đuro.“ „Katica, you are not my sweetheart, but my dear sister! Why didn't you tell me earlier; we could have taken our mother with us. “ There are many displaced persons as a consequence of war with many incredible stories to tell.

KRAJ ČRLENOG MORJA Kraj črlenog morja krvav boj se bije, A devojka mlada pod borom se smije. Izvana se smije, vu srcu se plače, Na spodobu đunđa sive suze stače. Divojčica mlada, zakaj tak tuguješ? Zakaj tužbu svoju več sama valuješ? A bloody battle is fought by the Red Sea while a young maiden is laughing under the pine-tree. She is laughing on the outside and weeping in her heart; her tears resembling lovely jewels. Why are you grieving, young maiden? Why are you all alone in your sorrow? The Red Sea (bloody sea) is any sea/river/lake where battles are fought and women are weeping.

PJEVAJ MI KATICA „Pjevaj mi pjevaj, Katica, mila, rumena ružica.“ „Kak bi ti ja, oj, pjevala kad ti jod tuge ne morem. Kad mi moj dragi othaja vu tu nesrečnu vojnicu. Vu tu nesrečnu vojnicu, dalke na tursku granicu. Kad se buš vrnul, dragi moj, z ove nesrečne vojnice?“ „Ja se bum vrnul, Katica, kad bude more presahle.“ „Kad bude more presahle i suhe dreve zacvele.“ „Toga ti ne bu, dragi moj, toga ti ne bu zanigdar.“ „Sing for me, Katica, my dear rosy flower! “ „How can I sing for you when I'm filled with sadness? My true love is leaving to fight in that terrible war, far away at the Ottoman empire border. When are you coming back, my darling? “ „I will return, Katica, when the seas dry up and dead trees bear flowers again.“ „This will never be, my love, never in a lifetime.“

PISALA JE DRAGA Pisala je draga svomu zaručniku: „Jel' si zabil za me da sam ja na svetu?“ 'Tpisali pajdaši : „Draga grličica, Tvomu zaručniku v grobu venu lica.“ She wrote a letter to her fiancee :“Have you forgotten about me, why are you not writing?“ His fellow-soldiers sent an answer: „Dear young maiden, your fiancee is rotting in his grave. “ Another universal and timeless folk song that could be coming from any country in the world.

The following words are engraved on a gravestone in the town of Marburg: „Twenty Seven Soldiers Have Died. Their bodies were not buried but thrown into the Sava and Drava rivers. “Mothers, do not weep for your sons, you will never find their graves.

Postaj sonce 02:55
POSTAJ SONCE Postaj, sonce, postaj, sonce, jedno malo više, jedno malo više. Aj Jura, aj Jura, moj mladi vojače, moja mladi vojače. Kak ti tebi stari otec lepi navuk daje, lepi navuk daje, Kak ti tebi stara majka lepi gvantec valja, lepi gvantec valja. Zbogom ostaj, zbogom ostaj, mila moja draga, mila moja draga. Jas te moram, jas te moram, v mladosti ostajti, v mladosti ostajti. Aj Jura, aj Jura, moj mladi vojače, moj mladi vojače. Sun, slow down a little. Oh, Jura, my young soldier. Your old father is giving you useful advice, your old mother is making you a nice suit of clothes. Sun, slow down a little when Jura goes to war. “Fare thee well my sweetheart, I must leave you forever. “ War has ruined the lives of so many people, especially the young who have just begun to live and love.

TAM' DALEKO ŠUMICA JE MALA Tam' daleko šumica je mala, tam daleko, oj! Tam daleko šumica je mala. U šumici zeleni se trava, u šumici oj! A u travi ljubičica plava. Imala sam brata i dragana, imala sam oj! Imala sam brata i dragana. Brata su mi Rusi zarobili, zarobili oj! Brata su mi Rusi zarobili. A dragoga možda i ubili, i ubili oj! A dragoga možda i ubili. Far away from here there is a small forest. The grass is green in the forest, and you can see blue violets growing there. I would like to pick the violets, but I have no-one to give them to. I did have a brother and a sweetheart. My brother was captured by the Russians, and my sweetheart may have even been killed by them. Song from World War I when young soldiers were recruited from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Other than Austria and Hungary, the empire's territory is today divided between Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Romania, Ukraine, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Poland

CUG MAŠINA JE GENULA Cug mašina je genula, a ma draga je medlela. When the train began to move my sweetheart almost fainted, saying: “Get down off the train, my heart is breaking. “ „I cannot get off the train even if your heart breaks this very instant.“

PISMO Z BELOVARA Došlo pismo z Belovara, baš za tebe, draga Bara. Pismo piše, o Barica, ostala si udovica. Tvoga dragog više nema, pokrila ga crna zemlja. A letter has arrived from the town of Belovar for you, dear Bara. The letter says you are a widow now. Your sweetheart is no more, he is buried under the black earth. When young Bara heard the news, she cried for three days, and started thinking on the fourth day. She kept thinking until she had no more thoughts, and then she went looking for her grave. The earth is her bed, the clear skies her bedspread.

Four horses are bringing the lads home from war. All the mothers are happy to see their sons. Only one is weeping – her son has not returned.

Šume šume 03:06
ŠUME, ŠUME Šume, šume, velika vam hvala, U vama se sloboda rađala. Hvala vama i hrabrom narodu! Thank you so much, forests. It was there our freedom was born, thanks to you and the brave people. Guns are being fired in the forests while little stars are twinkling in the skies. A young partisan was there and he died for his people.

STARI SOLDAT PUTOM GRE Stari soldat putom gre, čik pobere, dobar je. Vidil ga je kapetan, pa mu ga zeme (i)z zuba van. Mladi soldat putom gre, čik pobere, dobar je. Vidil ga je kapetan pa mu ga zeme (i)z zuba van. Stari soldat putom gre, mladi soldat putom gre, Stari soldat putom gre, mladi soldat opet gre, I opet gre,I opet gre,I opet gre… The old soldier is walking along the road. He picks up a cigarette butt, it's a good one. The captain sees him and snatches the butt from mouth. The young soldier is walking along the road. He picks up a cigarette butt, it's a good one. The captain sees him and snatches the butt from his mouth. The old soldier is walking along the road. The young soldier is walking along the road again, and he will be going again, and again, and again… Just like the first song in the album, this one is about the repetition of everything. Those who are on top/in charge are the ones taking away/snatching from those who are subordinated. The downside of any system is in the people themselves - when human greed for power/wealth becomes insatiable.

about

If women were asked, it is less likely that we would have wars in our world.
Sadly, regardless of the tragedies caused by wars, it is a never-ending story.
The songs in this album are about the feelings and lives of women caught in war circumstances. They are not protest songs as such, but tragic stories of those of them left behind when men went to war; the mothers, the wives, the loved ones. The songs could easily be songs of today.
The 14 songs are in chronological order of the wars that took place in Croatia – from the Ottoman Empire invasion to World War II. They are mostly brief glimpses of tragic moments that brought grief and pain into the lives of women, their sweethearts, husbands, sons.
All of the songs are traditional folk songs, coming from different parts of continental Croatia (Međimurje, Podravina, Hrvatsko zagorje, Prigorje, Slavonija). Many of them have never been recorded before, and they have been arranged by Dunja Knebl and Adam Semijalac on basis of folk songs in songbooks.
