Divojka i ranjeni junak

Otišla divojka za goru zelenu,
Za goru zelenu po vodu studenu.
Kad divojka došla na vodu studenu,
Pokraj vode našla ranjenog junaka.
Kad divojka bliže, junak glavu diže,
Junak glavu digne, divojka pobegne.
„Ne ostavljaj mene, prelepa divojka,
Neg mi beri travu, pak mi veži glavu!
Ako ja ozdravim, tebe ne ostavim,
Ako ne ozdravim, konja ti ostavim.“
Divojka je stala, junaka slušala,
Travu zebirala, glavu mu vezala.
Zarasle su rane na glavi junaka,
Junak je ozdravil, divojku ostavil.
Divojka je za njim suze prolevala,
Nevernog junaka strašno zaklinjala:
„Naj ti vene srce ko makovo zrnce,
naj ti vene duša kak na suncu ruža!“
Divojačku kletvu nebo poslušalo,
Nevernom junaku kaštigu poslalo.
Zvračil si je negda bil ranjenu glavu,
Ali neje zvračil na svom srcu ranu;
Venolo mu srce kak makovo zrnce,
Venola mu duša kak na suncu ruža.

A girl went to the green hills to fetch fresh water.
There, she found a wounded man by the spring and fled.
“Don’t leave me, beautiful girl, but find some herbs to heal my wounds.
If I live I will never leave you, if I die I will leave my horse to you.”
The girl did what the man asked for.
His wounds healed, but he left.
The girl shed many tears and cursed:
“Let your heart wither like a poppy seed, let your soul wither like a rose in the sun!”
The young man’s head healed but never the wound in his heart.
It withered like a poppy seed and his soul like a rose in the sun.
