Markec išel v taborec, domaj stavil Katicu,
Domaj stavil Katicu, lepu vrtnu ružicu.
„Oj, mamica, mamica, pazite na Katicu,
Kad bu dete rodila podajte joj vodicu!“
Išla majka vu goru da donese vodice,
Listiće odgrnula, kačicu odvalila.
Kača pusti čemera, majka toči pehara,
Majka toči pehara, da odnese Katici.
„Oj, mamica, mamica, podajte mi vodice!“
Nije dala vodice, već je dala otrova.
Kak je Kata popila mom je dušu spustila.
„Oj nesretna maćeha, kaj si sad napravila?“
„Oj mamica, mamica, de je naša Katica?“
„Kaj ti ja znam kam ti je, dišla ti je na pole.“
Markec zezul čižmicu pak je vudril narbicu,
Vrata se otvorila, nutri videl mrtve dva.
Nutri videl mrtve dva, Katicu i Iveka,
F komorki zagrljeni, na drugi svet otpravljeni.
„Oj,mamica, mamica, idmo mi dva ruže brat,
Kaj 'mo mrtve kinčali, na drugi svet otpravljali“
Kak se majka prignula da bi ružu ftrgnula,
Markec spukne sablicu, odseče majki glavicu.
„Idi glava za glavom, idi duša za dušom,
Ti fčinila mrtve dva, ja načinil tretjega.“

Before going to serve in the army, Markec asked his mother to care for his pregnant wife Katica, and help her give birth by fetching some water.
When Katica was in labour, mother gave snake-poison for of water. When Markec came back asking for his wife, mother pretended she knew nothing.
Upon finding both his Katica and child dead, Markec invited his mother to come and pick some flowers for the burial.
When mother stopped to pick a rose Markec severed her head saying:
“A head for a head, a soul for a soul!”
