Ovčar ovce pase

Ovčar ovce pase vu mladu nedelju,
On si je pak legel pod bukvu podrtu;
Pod bukvom mu kriči jeno malo dete,
Ovčar ide dimo, detešce pak za njim.
„Dober večer Bog daj, moja mlada mama!“
„Kakša bi ja bila tvoja mlada mama!
Stopram si ve sedim za stolom rumenim,
Za stolom rumenim pod vencem črlenim.“
„Ti si mi, divojka, troje dece mama:
Prvoga rodila, vu vodu pustila.
Drugoga rodila, med svinje hitila,
A mene tretjega pod bukvom 'stavila.
Mene su hranile te nebeske ptice,
Mene povijale kače jadovače.
Tvoj črleni venec je peklenski zaves;
Tva črlena parta peklenska žerjavka.
Tvoj črleni pantlik je peklenski plamen.“
„Či sam ja tva mama, naj me strela vudri!“
Još ne zgovorila, strela ju vudrila.

One day a shepherd was followed by a child to his home where a wedding was taking place.
The child greeted the bride saying: “Evening, young mother!”
The young woman was astonished and denied the truth, but the child said:
“You’re the mother of three. You threw your first child into the river, the secondto the swine, and you left me, the third under a beech tree.
I was raised by heavenly birds and poisonous serpents.”
“If I’m your mother, let lightning strike me!”
As she uttered those words she was struck by lightning.
